Surgery of the ear Oroplasty

Aesthetic surgery of the ear, also called oroplasty, is one of the most common procedures in cosmetic surgery.

This procedure is even done very early on in age, because protruding ears can often be the cause of many cruel jokes that can affect the psychological development of the child. By the time the child is 5 years old the ears its cartilage is fully developed. Therefore it is possible to correct its shape and/or position. Many parents decide to do it at the time when a child starts seeing its ears as a problem. For example, girls often avoid wearing pony tails so they can hide their ears.

Procedure

This procedure is mostly done under local anesthesia with mild sedation but it can also be done under general anesthesia with short term anesthetics especially for children. The duration of the procedure is less than an hour.

Recovery

The incision is made behind the ear near the junction with the head and then the cartilage can be reshaped or parts can be removed. After the procedure, bandages are worn over both ears during the first week. This helps to keep the ears in the new position. Later on a headband should be worn at least during the night for few weeks.
